Epson ink cartridges cannot be recognized

One of the most annoying and common problems faced by Epson printer owners is the dreaded error message stating, "Ink cartridges cannot be recognized". It is actually just as common a problem when using genuine Epson ink cartridges as when you're using compatible ink cartridges. There are a few steps you can take if you experience this problem:

  1. Remove all of the ink cartridges from the printer.
  2. Turn the printer off and completely unplug it from the wall.
  3. Let it sit without power for at least 20 minutes.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  5. Reinstall all of the ink cartridges.

Occasionally the error code and problem arise when an ink cartridge is not sitting properly in the printer and they do not make proper contact with the printer.

When you install, reinstall or remove ink cartridges, make sure the microchips on the cartridges are clean. Never touch them with your fingers. If you continue to receive the same error message after following the steps above, try replacing one ink cartridge at a time until you find the culprit.

IMPORTANT!! Never update your Epson printer's firmware if you are using compatible ink cartridges. The company actively tries to discourage the use of compatible ink cartridges (non-Epson cartridges) and firmware updates often will make the printer reject any non-Epson ink cartridges. Be sure to turn off auto-updating if your printer has this feature.
